Steinerne Metzen - Feldbachs Wahrzeichen

Feldbach

The landmark of Feldbach.

The Stone Metzen dates back to the 15th century. It was chiseled from basalt tuff. The chalice standing on an octagonal base served as an early sample measure ("Feldbacher Maß"), which was presumably used in the entire district. According to this measure, the surrounding settlements had to check their movable, mainly wooden vessels (Schaffel) for their contents. The Metzen holds 55 liters, up to the upper hole 26 liters. The top outer diameter is 75 cm, the inner 61 cm, the depth of the hollow measure 26 cm. In his novel "Die Gallerin" Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall explained that the citizens of Feldbach should have had the privilege to measure in this measure the grain sold to them, so that what ran out at the hole was to their advantage. At the end of the 17th century, governmental efforts began to standardize the regionally completely different measurements. In the course of the redesign of the main square from 2001 to 2004, the Stone Metzen was restored and moved from the center of the main square to its present location in front of the Feldbach town hall. It is considered the outstanding landmark of the city. In this way, it was included in the newly designed Feldbach city coat of arms in 2016.
